What is specialty coffee?
Specialty coffee is coffee that scores 80 points or more out of 100 on the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) cupping scale. Trained tasters grade the beans for aroma, flavour, sweetness, acidity, body and defects. A high score means carefully grown, picked and processed coffee with clear, clean flavours you can actually taste, from chocolate and caramel to berries and citrus.
Most supermarket coffee is "commodity" coffee, roasted dark to hide defects. Specialty coffee is usually roasted lighter so the character of the farm and region comes through.
How we grade coffee on CoffeeSouks
To make choosing easier, our coffee finder groups specialty coffees by SCA score:
- Silver: 81 to 82 points. Clean, balanced everyday specialty.
- Premium: 83 to 85 points. More sweetness and clearer flavour notes.
- Gold: 86 to 88 points. Complex, standout lots.
- Cup of Excellence: 90+ points. Rare, award-level coffees.

You can order specialty coffee from Lebanese roasters on CoffeeSouks and get it delivered the next day anywhere in Lebanon, with cash on delivery.
Is specialty coffee more expensive?
A 250 g bag of specialty coffee usually costs a little more than supermarket coffee, but it makes around 15 to 20 cups, so the difference per cup is small.
Should I buy whole beans or ground coffee?
Whole beans stay fresh longest. If you don't have a grinder, choose your brew method when ordering and the roaster grinds it for you. See our coffee grinders if you want to grind at home.
